From Extremes to Equilibrium: Finding True Balance in Work and Life

The Catapult Effect

Have you ever experienced going from one extreme to another before finally finding your balance?

This journey isn’t uncommon for those of us who devote so much of our identity to our careers. But how often do we stop to think about the effect this has on our overall well-being?

From Overworking to Underworking: My Own Catapult

When I worked as a VP in San Francisco, my identity became my job. I loved what I did, but I was working 50 to 70 hours a week, entirely focused on making the business and the people within it successful. I didn’t really know who I was outside of my career, and my “downtime” was usually spent unwinding with a beer, trying to recover from the stress.

When I finally resigned to start my own business, I swung to the opposite extreme. Instead of working 50-70 hours a week, I worked 5-7. I locked away that version of myself—the workaholic—and used the time to get to know who I was beyond my job title.

I did yoga, meditated, journaled, spent time in nature, and discovered more about myself than ever before. It was a profound and necessary experience that cultivated a deep sense of self-love and wholeness I hadn’t known.

A New Unexpected Belief That Held Me Back

As I slowed down and prioritized self-care, a new belief quietly formed: my time is too precious to ever overbook again. At first, this seemed empowering. But without realizing it, this belief grew in power and created subtle blockages.

Suddenly, I had stories like, “I’ll never use an alarm clock again,” or “I don’t talk to anyone before 11am,” and “Mondays are MY days.” I had unknowingly created energetic boundaries that stopped me from spending more time on my business and the very work I loved.

The Overcorrection: Limiting Myself Without Knowing It

I started my business because I loved my work—training leaders brought me joy, fulfillment, and energy. But in my attempt to balance my life, I overcorrected, placing limits on myself that held me back from reaching new heights in my career.

And yet, I don’t believe there’s such a thing as a “wrong turn” so I wouldn’t change a thing. I needed this time to learn how to love, trust, and understand myself on a deeper level. The key is realizing when we’ve created limiting beliefs, allowing us to extend ourselves grace as we evolve.

Finding True Equilibrium: Freedom and Fulfillment

The new story I’ve embraced is one of balance. I can maintain the spacious, tranquil, nature-loving side of myself while having a fulfilling, abundant career doing exactly what I love. This equilibrium brings me more joy and satisfaction than I ever thought possible.
